
Getting the Heat Right: IR Lamps for Smartphone Repair
If you’ve ever spent an afternoon fighting with a stubborn solder joint, you know the struggle. You need a blast of heat right where the component is, but if you’re not careful, you’ll cook the entire PCB and turn a simple repair into a paperweight. That’s why we build our infrared (IR) lamps the way we do. We wanted the same raw power you find in those overpriced industrial rigs, but at a price that won’t wipe out the monthly budget of a small shop. Fast heat. No waiting. We use shortwave IR technology here. The big win? It hits the board faster than longwave radiation. Instead of sitting there staring at a chip for minutes, you reach that “liquidus” melting point quickly. We pushed the wattage high relative to the size of the tube to make sure the ramp-up is snappy. Just a heads-up: if you’re running a high-wattage setup, double-check your power supply. These things can pull a decent amount of current on a cold start, and nobody likes a tripped breaker in the middle of a job. Built to take a beating The filaments are housed in high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because repair work is a cycle of “on and off.” That constant temperature swing creates thermal shock, and cheap glass just cracks. Quartz doesn’t. Inside, the halogen cycle keeps things clean. It stops the filament from evaporating and gunking up the inside of the tube. This means the light stays clear and the heat stays consistent, even after thousands of hours of use. Putting them to work Most of our lamps are designed to be simple drop-in replacements. We used standard connectors, so you aren’t spending your weekend guessing which wire goes where. You get a tight, concentrated beam—perfect for melting screen adhesive or lifting an IC chip. But remember, with that kind of density, distance is everything. Too far away, and you lose that shortwave punch. Too close, and you’re risking a scorched board. My best advice? Keep a calibrated thermocouple on the PCB. It takes the guesswork out of the process so you can just focus on the repair.
