
A Real-World Look at Carbon Infrared Heat Lamps
Ever wonder why some heaters just warm the air while others feel like they’re heating you right through your clothes? That’s the magic of carbon infrared. Instead of the old-school metal filaments, we use carbon fiber tucked inside a quartz tube. The cool part is that these filaments don’t need to get screaming hot to do their job. They push out a ton of infrared energy in the medium-to-short wave range. In plain English? The heat actuallysoaks intoyour materials rather than just dancing on the surface.
Getting the Power Right
Here is where things get a bit picky. We build these lamps to hit a specific heat flux, but you have to be careful with your wattage and tube length. If you cram too much wattage into a short tube, the power density spikes. And please, do yourself a favor:match your power supply exactlyto the lamp’s rated voltage. If you under-volt it, you won’t get that deep penetration. If you over-volt it? You’ll probably burn through your filament in a few hours. It’s a tight window, but getting it right makes all the difference.
The Build and the Plugs
We use quartz glass because it can handle the heat without melting and lets the IR radiation pass right through. Depending on what you’re heating, we can even add coatings to tweak the wavelength. For the connections, we stick with R7s or Sk15. They’re standard for a reason—they just work. They slide right into most industrial heater banks and fit tight. You don’t want any gaps there, otherwise, you’ll start seeing arcing at the terminals when the current kicks in.
Using Them in the Shop
If you’re doing PET blowing or curing plastics, these are your best friend. They ramp up fast. Really fast. This means your cycle times drop and you get more done in a day. But there are a couple of traps to watch out for. First, keep your reflectors clean. If they’re pitted or covered in grime, you’re basically throwing away your efficiency. Also, don’t forget your cooling fans. You need to pull the heat away from the wiring and connectors. If you don’t, you’re looking at melted insulation, and nobody wants to deal with that.
