
Stop Treating Your IR Lamps Like Disposables
Let’s be honest: in most electronics plants, infrared lamps are treated like cheap lightbulbs. You use them until they pop, toss them in the bin, and slap in a new one. Every few months, it’s the same cycle. It’s a waste of money, a pain for the techs, and it’s a nightmare for anyone actually trying to hit “zero-waste” targets. If we want to stop the constant swapping, we have to look at what’s actually happening inside the glass. The heat trap Here’s the thing: most engineers just look at how much heat they need right now. They pick a lamp, crank the wattage, and call it a day. But if you push too much power into a short tube, you create these brutal hotspots. It’s basically a death sentence for the filament. We prefer to balance the voltage and the length. It spreads the heat load out. If you cram high wattage into a tiny footprint without the right cooling fans, the lamp ends up baking its own connectors. Not a great look. The secret to a clear tube Ever notice how some lamps get cloudy before they die? That’s the tungsten filament evaporating and sticking to the walls. To fix that, we use a halogen gas fill. It creates a cycle that pushes that tungsten back into the filament, keeping the quartz crystal clear and the lamp alive much longer. We also use high-purity quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. And for the wiring? Stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They snap in tight. In a factory full of vibrating machinery, a loose connection leads to arcing, and arcing kills lamps. Simple as that. The real-world trade-off Now, I’m not telling you this is a magic trick. There’s always a catch. If you want a lamp that lasts for years, you usually can’t push it to its absolute thermal limit. You might lose a tiny bit of peak intensity, but in exchange, you get way longer service intervals. For most curing and drying jobs, that’s a trade I’ll take any day. It means fewer teardowns, less downtime, and a lot less industrial scrap hitting the landfill.
